we promised our nieces and nephew months ago that we would have them over for a sleepover. the summer went by way too fast, and we realized we needed to follow through before school started! we picked them up last night and had such a great time with them! we watched all kinds of movies, they played in the backyard and entertained cooper for hours. this morning, devin took the oldest, kayla, rock climbing (it was our birthday present to her. 2 birds with 1 stone, right?!) and while they were climbing, i took the younger ones on a little drive to see the "Up" house! it was so cool and they loved it! after a quick lunch, they were back home, but it was so much fun to spend some time with them! i love these kids so much. i'm so glad i'm their aunt!

katie, lately
Life has been such a circus lately! There has been so much going on that I just don't have the time to sit down long enough to write up an entire blog posts! That being said -- am I mis-using this Sunday afternoon while Devin plays video games? I'm gonna say no for now. Here's what I've been up to lately...
kade loves dogs. he just doesn't know it yet.
the whole family waiting for the show to start at the new pavilion by the senior center in orem
so devin's grandpa is in a band. he plays the trumpet and they are really incredible!
cooper sat with devin like this for at least 15 minutes
addi's signature pose - showing me her cute shoes
the most perfect batch of macarons i've made to date! these were for my cousin's fiance's bridal shower!
my sister and her husband are in a band called The Zero Summers - and they are becoming a pretty big deal! when they played a show at university mall in orem, we knew we had to make it! they did so great, and i thought they were even better than the headliner!
< sometimes when i'm having a bad day, i go home on my lunch break and snuggle with cooper. and then i'm alright.
> we went to our favorite, Gourmandise, for dinner last week with our dear friend Skyler and I couldn't pass up their macarons, of course. this place is an authentic french bakery, so their macarons are basically perfect! i ordered a pistachio and chocolate macaron and the server brought me a lemon one to try for free! the pistachio is my favorite so far!
< car rides with this dog
> i just can't. he's the cutest thing.
< we went to the bee's game with sean and chloe one night! they were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the movie "The Sandlot" - so the cast was there! Ham looks exactly the same. It was pretty awesome!
> yesterday morning, Devin grabbed the mail on his way home from work. He walked in carrying a package and I asked him what it was. He looked at me confused and said it was for me, asking if I had ordered anything. I hadn't. When I opened the package, I found this amazing french macaron cookbook and a note from my sweet friend Amy, saying she works for a company that just published this book and when she saw it, she knew I'd love it! I'm still not over how sweet it was of her! I am so excited to try making some more! thanks a million, Ames!

Things can get a little confusing around here with my sister McKayla and my niece Makayla! The spelling is different in their names, if that helps you keep them straight! So for the record, my sister is the engaged one, and my niece is the birthday girl! We spent the entire weekend celebrating miss Makayla and I wouldn't have it any other way! We spent Saturday afternoon with the family at Provo Beach Resort playing games and eating delicious treats - Devin and I had never been before and we were both loving it! I think next time we'll for sure have to try the rope coarse though! The kids had so much fun in the massive playground, the adults played an exciting game of bowling, and Amanda and I shuffled between the two to keep track of everybody, all the while playing with a happy smiley baby Benny! It was such a fun afternoon and Devin and I were pretty upset we had to leave a little early. But we all will get together again tonight to have cake and ice cream! It was so much fun to spend the day with our family - we love them all so much!
---------------------------------------
There are too many good things to say about my sweet niece. She is such a big part of our family. Bigger than she knows. Makayla is very very small for her age, so it's so hard to believe how grown up she is! We are all in denial that she is practically a teenager now. Makayla is a leader. She always has been. She loves to be the boss and she's good at it. You can put Kayla in charge of something, and you can trust her with it. She is very curious, always wanting to learn new things. I went to the library with her a few weeks ago and she checked out three different books on hurricanes! I met Kayla just after her 8th birthday, when Devin and I started dating, and for as long as I've known her, she's wanted to be a meteorologist! A Meteorologist! What kind of kid comes up with that stuff?! She's so smart and loves to learn. She is such an amazing big sister, too. She's her mom's right hand gal! Kayla and her little brother Kaden are best friends. They can play together for hours and hours and their imaginations are endless. They love computer games and playing on the wii and they're both obsessed with legos! Kayla is so independent and she rarely cares what other people think about her. She is never afraid to just be herself, and she's got such a witty sense of humor! We love Makayla so much and can't believe she's already eleven! For her birthday, Devin and I are going to spend an afternoon rock climbing with her (she loves it!) and then take her out to lunch. Happy Birthday, baby! We love you SO much more than you'll ever know!
these three kids are going to be each other's best friends for the rest of their lives. and i love it.
< this little one sure loves pictures!
> the only picture i got from provo beach resort! i wish i would have thought to take a few more!
this is what happens when you tell addi to strike a pose! she's hilarious!

weekend
it's already thursday night and i haven't posted about our weekend yet! we've had a lot of exciting weekends in a row, and i've been so busy planning and getting ready for the next two weekends (devin's birthday party and our anniversary trip) that i haven't had time for much of anything lately! i'm glad i had already prepared most of this weeks blog every day in may posts because i would so be losing right now if that weren't the case... anyway... the weekend...
i don't remember what we did friday night, so i'm thinking that devin was probably at work and i just bummed around (because that sounds about right!)
saturday was such a crazy busy day. we were all over the place! first stop: tibble fork. our long time climber friends, Jed and Nicki are engaged and we took their engagement photos up there saturday morning. This is when coop learned to swim! I love that place and it was fun to spend the afternoon photographing such a fun couple. We had such a good time and it was quick and easy!
next we needed some foooood! we were down in provo now, so we decided we were overdue for some Slab, our favorite pizza! it's as good as ever. the waffle love truck was parked across the street, and we couldn't just not give it a try! verdict: it was pretty good, but it's sub par to our bruge's. the waffle was overcooked and dry and the creme fraiche wasn't nearly as good, but we still enjoyed it and are glad we tried it! plus, how cute is that truck?!
part 3 of our afternoon was the open house at the masonic temple. our good friend, Matt is the Chief Worshipful Master, and we were both a little curious about the masons. we learned so much and i was blown away with how cool the masons are. I am so glad we went. It was such a cool experience! Did you know that Masonry isn't a religion? It's a fraternity. A brotherhood. Matt said they're "glorified grown up boy scouts, without the camping" - i think that was the perfect way to put it. They basically come together and form this brotherhood, this group of men who are there to support each other. Who are tolerant of all religions, and give to charity, and learn and teach and practice being better men, brother, husbands, sons, and community members. It's so cool! About half of the latter-day prophets were Masons, and so were a lot of presidents and celebrities! I'm a fan of these guys. They do a lot of good for their communities. I think more people should have gone to the open house!
after the open house, devin went to his parent's house and ran a few errands and I went with my mom to my cousin's baby shower. my aunt kathy threw it and it was a lot of fun! i won one of the games we played where we had to unscramble baby-related words and a few of the girls were giving me such a hard time about it, i just didn't understand! they kept saying stuff like "well, why don't have just have mrs smarty-pants tell us all the answers, since she thinks she has them all" --- uh... wait a second. is this third grade? weird. whatev. i guess i'm good at word games! my cousin mckenzie is have a baby boy and she's due next month! i'm so excited for her and she looked so cute! we got her some diapers and a little dinosaur print sleeper. baby boy clothes are the cutest. i sometimes ask devin if we can buy them when i see cute stuff at target. he always says no... i wonder why?! anyway, the shower was a lot of fun and had the cutest little spread! i forgot to take a picture until the food was about half gone, but it was still cute!
last stop of the night was devin's parents for a barbecue celebrating jason's birthday and benjamin's blessing that would be the next day. devin's parents had recently put up a new playground in the backyard and the kids are crazy for it! they had so much fun trying to get cooper to climb up the slide and he was getting so frustrated and anxious when he couldn't get up! they also got a kick of him going down the slide, which he loves. and those ashby's know how to barbecue! it was delicious!
on sunday, we slept in as late as we possibly could before heading down to springville for ben's blessing. it was awesome to see all the people that came to support sean and chloe! and i'll just tell you - sean is the sweetest dad. he is so smitten with ben and is so careful and fatherly. it's the cutest thing. you could tell he was a little nervous to give the blessing, but i don't blame him! he did such a great job, and chloe was told that ben smiled the whole time! it was fun for me to watch devin participate in the circle and get excited about how the next baby blessing he is a part of will probably be for our own child in a few years! he'll be the greatest dad, i just know it :) devin and i somehow ended up at one end of the bench with kayla kaden and addi. they all behaved pretty well! addi sat on my for the first half of the meeting and played with my hair and read the hymn book quietly - she is such a sweetheart! for the second half of the meeting, she cuddled right up in devin's arms and fell asleep. talking about melting my heart, it was the cutest thing i've ever seen! every time something was loud, it would wake her up a little and she would just squeeze tighter to deving and go back to sleep. it was adorable! after the meeting, we had delicious food and sean and chloe's (your guys' yard looks AMAZING by the way! when we buy a house, will sean plant all of our shrubs and trees?! because seriously. it's so great!) ben was the life of the party and so was their friend's cute little girl, Tabby who was all about Moses! i don't know how I managed to get ZERO pictures of ben in his cute little blessing outfit (the same one brandon sean and devin wore 25+ years ago! so cute!), but it happened. just know he looked very handsome and very happy! he had the cutest little moccasins on but they wouldn't stay on his wiggly little feet! it was such a good sunday to spend with family!

easter weekend
f r i d a y / /
amanda and jason had come down on wednesday with the kids and with work and school, we weren't able to see them yet, so as soon as we got home from work on friday, we went straight to see them (right after we stopped for an ice cream cone. because it had been one of those weeks...). we played with the babies all night and had delicious salmon for dinner. those kids are hilarious. they crack me up! they thought devin and i were ridiculous for not knowing what minecraft was, and Addi insisted on dancing to gangnam style for most of the night. we had plans to watch lincoln, but it got too late and we headed home.

devin had to work saturday morning so i headed to the gym, then came home and did some cleaning. i also made more macarons for easter dinner: vanilla with nutella filling and chocolate with marshmallow filling (those were a hit!), then i wrapped addison's birthday present and put together some little easter baskets for my nieces and nephews (can i just say how happy i am that i have plural nephews now?! i love it. the best kids ever!). when devin got home, i gave him his easter basket (conductive fingertip gloves you can use with touch phones and TONS of candy) and he came home with a present for me, too! he had found a little boutique and went inside because he thought i would love the dress in the window. he came home with two really cute shirts he had picked out for me. i love them! he knows me so well :) they were the wrong size, so we ran back to the store to exchange them but they didn't have the sizes i needed so we got a different shirt and a skirt instead. he's the sweetest. when we got home (oh by the way, devin got stung by a WASP this afternoon! a little scary, but he's okay) we got ready really fast and met up with kayla and kyle in draper so we could all go up to OGDEN. kelli and sean just bought a house in ogden so we decided to have a big johnson sibling sleepover while our parents were in wendover. it was so much fun. we got up there, got a tour of their cute house (they have already done so much work on it and it looks incredible!) and then went out to dinner at a little diner with the best french fries ever! after that, we went to the store and got tons of snacks and junk food and set up all our mattresses and pads and pillows in the living with two TVs and the boys played video games while the girls watched chick flicks. we took cooper with us and he and zero played ALL NIGHT. they wrestled and played literally the entire time we were there. cooper got NO SLEEP and it was so obvious the next day. he was so tired it was hilarious! i'd never seen him like that. hopefully he learned his lesson :)

we woke up pretty early and sat around and played games for a few hours and then went out to breakfast. turns out easter is a pretty popular holiday for going out to breakfast! it was hard to find an open restaurant and once we did, the wait was long, but the food was delicious and it was worth it. (we had to eat out because kelli and sean don't have a functioning kitchen yet). we all got a kick out of how fast kyle ate his food. he had literally cleared his plate of 2 pieces of french toast, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of sausage before everyone at the table had their food. and then he finished everyone else's food! he's bottomless, i swear! we all headed home after that and devin and i pretty much went straight down to his parents for some easter celebrating. we gave addi her birthday present (her birthday was saturday) which was a Tangled dress-up dress and she loved it! she had gotten the Brave dress-up dress from her grandma earlier that day, so she was in toddler heaven! we ate dinner and then did a big easter egg hunt with the kids and i took the fancy camera for some more practice. (learning how to use that big fancy nikon is sure frustrating!). we were so exhausted after the busy weekend that we pretty much went straight home after that and caught up on some tv shows and went to bed.

monday counts as part of the weekend because we both worked short days becaaaaauuuusssee Kyle and Jami got MARRIED!!!! we've been good friends with kyle and jami for years and were so excited when they got engaged! they had hired their good friend to fly out from new york to take their wedding photos, and last week, all of his camera equipment was stolen out of his apartment! (worst news EVER when his JOB was photography!) they asked devin to step in at the last second, and i trailed faithfully behind like the good assistant i am. i was so excited to finally go to a wedding that we weren't working, but i guess we'll still have to wait for that! the ceremony was beautiful and it was a lot of fun to see and catch up with good friends.
