a quick update

KYLE is doing awesome. I spent the day with him on Monday watching movies, helping him with homework and goofing off. He was able to do a bicep curl motion with his left arm (it's his left collarbone that's broken) - which is awesome! He was always walking around without a sling on, which was also impressive.

His surgery was yesterday, Tuesday. He check in at 7:15 and went in for surgery around 9, and was out by 11, but didn't come out of recovery until about 1:30 or 2:00. The strong medicines make him really nauseous, and he was feeling very dizzy and light headed coming out of the anesthesia. He was also really confused. He knew where he was and what was happening, but all the noises were really worrying him, and would make him panic, which would make his oxygen monitor go off, saying his oxygen levels were low, which would scare him more, which would make the whole situation worse, so they gave him oxygen and he was finally able to sleep for a few hours before going home. The whole act of getting up and moving to get discharged completely wore him out, and he went home and got lots of rest.

I didn't see him at all yesterday. My mom said that since he wasn't doing good and there were so many people in and out of the small hospital room, it would be best to stay out of the way. I'm sure today he is feeling much better. The Dr. said the pain would go from pain of a broken bone to pain of the incision site, which is awesome! He has a plate and 8 screws in his shoulder now and the Dr. said he would heal for the most part in 6-8 weeks, and would gain back his full range of motion, which is a big deal for a baseball player!

Kyle doesn't want to miss a beat. While he recovers, he wants to strengthen is throwing arm and legs and get as strong as possible. He wants to be able to be with the team at all the games and as they go to an upcoming tournament, even though he can't play. He just wants to support his team and watch and help however he can.

I still can't believe how positive he is being about all of this. There is a lot I could learn from my little brother. He is an amazing example of working hard, earning what you get, and staying optimistic. I am so grateful for him, his attitude, his ability to handle this situation the way he has (especially for a 16 year old!). I love him so much! Couldn't ask for a better little brother.

As for Devin and I... this week is a busy one for Devin between all his school work, editing a wedding, and getting ready for his backpacking trip. We went grocery shopping last night and decided to try out Harmon's, which we both like, but it will take some getting used to. I love Target because 1. It's Target. What's not to love? 2. I know where everything is. 3. I know what brands they carry, and how much they cost 3. It's close to home and 4. We usually know about how much we are spending.

Even though our trip to Harmon's was a little impulsive for the most part (Devin's favorite purchase? An entire chocolate cake. Which, I'll admit, is absolutely delicious. But do normal people just buy cakes from the bakery because they look good? haha!) we spent a bit more than usual, but that's okay. We came home and made fajitas and watched New Girl, which just gets funnier with each episode.

Now I'm headed to my parents to hang out with Kyle while there's a gap between people being home. We don't want him to be alone for the next couple days, obviously. He is so set on doing things for himself, but we all know he needs the help and it will make all the difference if he can just rest and relax.

NOT looking forward to this weekend. It will be awful with Devin gone Friday through Sunday, but my lovely friends and family are already making plans to help distract me, thank goodness! I'm even debating staying at my parents... that's how much I don't want to be here alone :(

BUT I know Devin will have SO much fun. He is excited, and he is going to learn a lot, and then he'll be able to teach me and we can backpack all summer long which I really wouldn't mind. We're already thinking of backpacking into Dean Lake in mid-June.
